O-CEI

innovation initiative for an open, secure and interoperable cloud edge IoT platform

The EU project “O-CEI” is a large-scale initiative with over 50 international partners, which is being implemented within the framework of the Horizon Europe program. The aim is to develop an open cloud edge IoT platform with a focus on interoperability, security and reliability.

The increasing demand for data and computing power—particularly from decentralized infrastructures such as Cloud Edge IoT (CEI) networks—is leading to a sharp increase in energy consumption, costs, and CO₂ emissions. The fragmented structure of cloud ecosystems, especially in conjunction with edge technologies and a multitude of connected devices such as electric vehicles and smart devices, complicates efficient resource management.

This is precisely where O-CEI comes in: As a Horizon Europe Innovation Action, the project aims to develop an open CEI platform that focuses on interoperability, security, and reliability. This should facilitate cross-sector collaboration and enable real-time data sharing.

What you should know

The innovation

O-CEI is developing an open cloud edge IoT platform that enables secure and interoperable data exchange across various sectors. The goal is to create a resilient ecosystem for data management, identity management, and distributed AI applications. Reference implementations, automation tools, and best practices facilitate the development and operation of CEI solutions. A particular focus is on energy profiling and flexibility forecasting using machine learning. O-CEI also supports standardization in the CEI field and promotes sustainable digitalization in Europe.
