CarbonZero4IMS
Decarbonization of the Inge-Morath-Siedlung Graz
CarbonZero4IMS is a collaborative research and development project that, as a flagship project for the energy transition, aims to completely convert an existing residential area in Graz to renewable heating and cooling. The focus is on the Inge-Morath-Siedlung, comprising 108 residential units and 51 individual buildings, which are currently heated centrally and decentrally with gas. The project is supported by a strong consortium and addresses key challenges of the energy transition in high-density housing.

What you should know
The innovation
The project goes beyond the state of the art by:
A digital twin of the entire system is created and linked with machine learning and model predictive control (MPC) for self-learning operation.
The dynamic management of electric boilers is used for network stabilization and cost optimization.
Implements a joint, neighborhood-wide energy concept instead of individual solutions.
Legal and technical challenges in the use of communal areas for probes and collectors are addressed.
