Josef Ressel Center for Platforms and Digital Ecosystems

Platforms and digital ecosystems in everyday life

Many of the world's most successful companies today are based on digital platforms and ecosystems, or "PDEs" (platforms and digital ecosystems). Compared to traditional companies that operate along a sequential value chain, PDEs create value by enabling interactions between suppliers and customers, thus facilitating transactions. PDEs have long been a part of our everyday lives: Uber connects passengers and drivers, Airbnb facilitates interactions between travelers and accommodation providers, and Amazon coordinates transactions between buyers and sellers.

In Asian markets, this development is even more advanced: there, so-called superapps combine numerous everyday needs in integrated digital ecosystems. Against this backdrop, the Josef Ressel Center, together with the next incubator of Energie Steiermark, Raiffeisen Landesbank Steiermark, and the K1 Group, is researching the potential of digital platforms and ecosystems for the Austrian economy. The aim is to scientifically analyze consumer-centric and sustainable concepts and to derive practical insights for companies that will help them better utilize digital opportunities.

The center is located at the Department of Marketing & Sales of FH CAMPUS 02 and is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism (BMWET), the Christian Doppler Research Association (CDG) and the corporate partners next-incubator of Energie Steiermark, Raiffeisen Landesbank Steiermark and the K1 Group.

What you should know

The center

The researchers at the center investigate the economic foundations of digital platforms and ecosystems. They pursue an interdisciplinary approach and combine three key perspectives.

From a strategic management perspective, competitive strategies and the development of business models are considered in the context of PDEs.
The customer management perspective focuses on issues surrounding acceptance, experience, and user perception.

From a brand management perspective, PDEs place special demands on brand positioning, identity, and brand awareness.
The center enables researchers to comprehensively understand the potential of platforms and digital ecosystems in everyday life, taking into account their specific characteristics, while simultaneously strengthening the transfer of knowledge between science and business.
